Good morning, Team Amin! It is already Week 2. I feel like the first week flew by, but I definitely enjoyed it! I hope this week brings lots of laughter and new learning too. Are we enjoying our new core text?

Learning for today:

PE: Find a safe space (Garden? Living room?) and do 10 jumping jacks, 10 squats and 10 bunny hops.

 

M: Start with a speedy recap of your 10x and 11x. You can do this with a dice game if you have dice, bingo, Hit the Button etc.?

Today, we are going to be working on adding 3 and 4 digit numbers with regrouping. If you need a reminder of steps:

Don't forget that 'carrying' is the old word for 'regrouping'. Don’t forget to make sure your columns align and include your operation symbol.

E: Listen to the next chapters of Varjak Paw which I put online for you at the end of last week!

Today, we are going to plan for writing a monologue as Varjak Paw as he makes his decision to leave home (The Inside) and venture to the Outside leaving the Elder Paw behind. What would be going through his head? Worry for the Elder Paw? Anger at the two black cats? Confusion for how to climb the wall? Frustration about his family?

Possible plan layout:

Paragraph 1: Initial thoughts on abandoning the Elder Paw to the black cats

Paragraph 2: Thoughts on finding a dog and showing his family they are wrong about him

Paragraph 3: Worry about venturing out into the Outside

Paragraph 4: Decision to climb the wall

Remember: a monologue is written in first person, is dramatic and needs to be powerful! How will you show Varjak’s emotions?

Create a mind map or a bullet point list of all the things you would include in your monologue! What will Varjak say? What questions will Varjak ask? Will he repeat things to make his monologue more powerful?

Topic: We are going to continue thinking about identity and belonging and explore ways in which our sense of belonging is shaped by our relationships and environment, focusing in particular today on the experiences of refugees.

What is a refugee?: A refugee is a human being who has been forced to leave their country and their home to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster (earthquakes, hurricanes etc.).

Some of us, or our adults, will know people who were/are refugees themselves. Miss Amin’s Dad was a refugee when he was only a little older than you and was forced to travel with his family from his home in Uganda to the UK. Many children across the world at the moment are refugees too and have to leave their homes to stay safe!

When you reach slide 10, I would like you to think about the questions posed and either note down your answers in your workbook or discuss them with your adult.

Question to reflect on: How would you make a child refugee feel welcome in this country, in Ramsgate, in our school?

 

Extra activities:

Art: Inspired by Jacey’s wonderful watercolour tree artwork, do you have paints/watercolours at home? Paint a picture of the view of your garden.

R: Access the new class reader Powerpoint if you haven’t already and listen along and/or read a chapter of a book of your choice.

Spelling: Practise this week’s new spelling in time to test yourself this Friday!
