 Maths:

Counting/Starter: Counting how many times you can write your age in 20 seconds.

Seeking and exploring patterns is at the heart of mathematics (Schoenfeld, 1992). Developing an awareness of pattern helps young children to notice and understand mathematical relationships. Clements and Sarama (2007) identify that patterns may provide the foundations of algebraic thinking, since they provide the opportunity for young children to observe and verbalise generalisations.

Patterns can be made with objects like coloured cubes, small toys, buttons and keys, and with outdoor materials like pine cones, leaves or large blocks, as well as with movements and sounds, linking with music, dance, phonics and rhymes. Children can also spot and create patterns in a range of other contexts, such as printed patterns, timetables, numbers and stories.

Today we are going to look at colour patterns.

It is important to provide patterns with at least three full units of repeat (see photo attached to blog). Encourage children to say the pattern aloud as this help to identify the part which repeats and helps to continue the pattern.

Steps of understanding patterns. Can they:

  1. Continue a pattern

  1. Copy a pattern

  1. Make their own pattern

Challenge: Can you make a pattern using 3 different colours?  (check out the attachments)

Extension: Can you make a pattern using objects around your house? (book, shoe, book, shoe, book, shoe)

Topic: Growth

Main: Minibeasts and their habitats. We all live in a home. Do minibeasts live in a house likes ours too? No they don’t but they do have their own homes. Do you think they all live in the same place? No they don’t. They all like different things. Watch the powerpoint below and videos to see where the different minibeasts live.

Extension: Can you make a minibeast habitat out of junk modelling? Or can you make a minibeast hotel in your garden. Look at the attachments for some examples. Minibeasts like natural things like leaves, stones, twigs, bricks etc.

Viking Academy Trust Writing Competition

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday, Mr McAuley (from Chilton Primary School) launched a new and exciting Viking Academy Trust writing competition! On this occasion though, we are extra fortunate because we have a professional author on board whose writing yours will be based ... Martyn Harvey, the author of The Boy with The Sauce Pan Hat, has very kindly given us special access to his poems, before they are released to the general public!

Day two of the writing challenge follows on from yesterdays video 'The Millipede'. Today, Martyn will show you how to illustrate a poem and how to develop a concept. He will also be introducing another 'brand new' poem and a sneak preview of one of the prizes in the competition. I really hope you enjoy the video and that it inspires you to begin to explore the life of animals around you, and begin to see the world from their perspective!

Remember, the competition will be formally launched on Friday, so sit back, put your creative hats on and enjoy the videos throughout the week.
