14/05/2020: Home Learning

It's almost Friday!

Learning for today:

PE: Yoga morning!

M: Start with a speedy recap of your number bonds to 20.

Today, we are moving on to practising finding the area of rectangles and rectilinear shapes. Finding the area of a shape means finding out about the space covered inside. Think of a playground sandpit, the edge all the way around the pit is what we know as the perimeter and the space covered by the sand inside is the area. For rectangles (and squares), finding the area involves using the length and width and multiplication (length x width). For rectilinear shapes, we can use the counting (the squares) method to help. We must remember that we add a little 2 after our units for area to show 'squared'. Take a look at the Lesson 4 guide for today and have a piece of paper to have a go at some of the calculations: https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-4/.

Done? You might like to, if you want to, have a go at the Comparing area worksheet attached below.

E: Catch up with the story so far.

We’re getting closer and closer to the unveiling of the clock tower figure. Every time the figure is unveiled in Glockenheim, lots of people gather in the village to watch. Friends and family are summoned from afar to visit. Of course, the only way to summon them is either by letter or in person. In these times, there is no phone, no email and certainly no Zoom call!

The Burgomaster would like for his young nephew, who is 8 years old and who has never visited Glockenheim, to come and see the unveiling. Write a letter as the Burgomaster to convince his nephew to come. The letter is informal (they are FAMILY), but does still need to have standard features of a letter (date, address, addressee, sign off, paragraphs).

How are you going to convince Nephew to come?

What might interest him with the unveiling of the clock tower figure? One of the figurines?

How should Nephew travel there? Who might he arrive with? Where can he stay?

How will you start the letter – go straight into convincing or ask about Nephew’s health and happiness first before moving into a visit to Glockenheim?

Think carefully as you write about how you would be convinced to go somewhere new and unfamiliar. Will you write the letter in postcard form or will it be a letter that looks old and dated that a messenger will present to Nephew? Have a think! You could be really creative with your presentation!

RWInc: Take a look at today’s learning task for Save the Whale! Spelling and text, as always, attached below. Remember to use a thesaurus to really upscale those highlighted words! :)

T: Today, I  would like you to use the notes from yesterday about protecting the rainforest to construct a SPEECH arguing for all of the reasons why protecting our rainforests is so important.

Potential things to consider rainforests offer:

a) Clean air: oxygen given off by trees and removal of carbon dioxide from the air

b) Fruit and vegetables

c) Use of variety of plants in important medications and treatments e.g. for cancer, leukaemia, malaria etc.

d) Homes for lots of species of animals and plants

e) Homes for people and indigenous tribes

f) Part of our natural planet

You need to think carefully about your layout. Introduce why you are talking, arrange your paragraphs so that they each deal with only 1 theme, include some interesting openers and provide proof for your arguments by using your notes/researching on the Internet.

We don’t just ‘need rainforests because they give us medications for illnesses’, we ‘need rainforests because they give us medications for illnesses. All across the world every day, X number of people get ill, but plants like Y and Z, which can ONLY be found in the rainforest, can give people hope to survive and doctors the ability to save them’ etc. Good research will give you lots of interesting facts and percentages to help bulk up your arguments if you are really going for this task! I can’t wait to read your speeches! You might even like to record yourself presenting them and send/upload a video.

Extra activities:

R: Access Powerpoint and listen along to The Diamond Brothers: The Greek who stole Christmas and/or read a chapter of a book of your choice.

Art: Using the pointillism technique (forming images with dots), create a rainbow piece for the NHS for Clap for Carers tonight! You can hold/put it up as you clap at 8pm.

Spelling: T5W4 words can be found online. Spelling test tomorrow!

Have a super Thursday! Don’t forget to send me emails/pictures of yourself doing learning/upload to Padlet! Missing you as always!
