Mountains!

See what we have learnt in topic today!

In topic today, we discussed the 5 main types of mountain formation.

We came up with actions to help us remember them and then matched up the types with examples, diagrams and definitions.

Fold Mountains form when tectonic plates collide. The Earth ‘s surface pushes up to form the mountains.

Fault-block Mountains form when large cracks in the earth’s surface open up, where some rocks are pushed up and some pushed down.

Volcanic Mountains are formed  when volcanoes erupt, and are made from layers of cooled ash and lava.

Dome Mountains are formed when magma is forced upwards, but cannot flow out, causing the land to bubble up like a balloon.

Plateau Mountains are formed when erosion occurs on the land, leaving deep valleys or gorges.
