History Comes to Life for RAPS’ Young ‘Victorians

The stark reality of life for children in Victorian Britain has been experienced first-hand by children from Ramsgate Arts Primary.

A variety of mundane daily chores, strict rules and a tough upbringing for their Victorian contemporaries gave the Year 6 group an eye-opening peep in to the past.

Dressed in authentic period clothing the RAPS team were transported back to Victorian times in a visit to the Kent Life experience near Maidstone.

The day included rug-making, an important household craft during the Victorian era, which allowed children to try their hands at the skills people used to keep warm in simpler times.

One of the highlights was the opportunity to attend a Victorian-style school lesson, complete with chalkboards and strict rote learning techniques. The pupils practised their handwriting and experienced what education was like for children more than a century ago.

The immersive experience continued as they toured a Victorian house, observing its period features and learning how everyday life differed from today's modern conveniences.

RAPS pupil Michael commented, "I enjoyed exploring inside the Victorian house because it was fascinating to see how they lived."

Pupils were also introduced to the harsh realities of child labour during the era. They discovered the kinds of jobs children their age might have done, such as working in factories or as chimney sweeps, and even measured themselves to see if they would fit up a chimney.

Adding to the historical experience, the RAPS visitors met nurse Florence Nightingale, played by a re-enactor, who taught them about the advancements in hygiene she introduced during the Crimean War. They practised bandaging techniques on ‘injured soldiers’ in true Nightingale style.

Assistant Head of School Hannah Dannell was enthusiastic about the benefits of the trip. She said: “It was a wonderful opportunity for the children to step into the past.

“They were able to see, touch, and feel what life was like in Victorian times, which really brought their History lessons to life. It was clear from their excitement that they thoroughly enjoyed it and learned a lot."

Pupil Harley’s thoughts echoes the sentiments of her classmates. She said: “The whole day was really interesting. We learned so much about how different life was back then."
