Ramsgate Wartime Tunnels

Year 6 journey into the amazing tunnels carved out beneath the town's roads as part of our topic 'World at War'...

Inside the tunnels we were treated to a cinema reel that showed footage from the time and the impact of the bombing raids on the town. Afterwards, we were given a fascinating tour under the guidance of the extremely-knowledgable Steve! He shared the story of the origin of the tunnels with the 'mad mayor' and explained how they tunnels were constructed. He also described the details of the worst raid of the war on Ramsgate and how this remarkable feat of engineering undoubtedly saved the lives of countless residents.

It really built on the learning we had done in the classroom about the Blitz and the need for evacuation for many children from urban areas during the war.
