What are mass and capacity?
This week in Maths we have been investigating mass and capacity. We began by comparing mass and learnt the key words heavier and lighter and we discovered how different materials have different mass. We found that a greater size doesn't always mean a greater mass as we discovered when we compared a feather to a marble! We enjoyed trying out a range of ways to compare mass - using our bodies and with different types of balance scales. We also learnt about capacity and had lots of fun exploring the capacity of different containers and were surprised to find how much the shape of a container can affect how much it holds. We investigated capacity using both liquids and other materials such as cubes and beads. We ended the week with a day of digging deeper into mass by asking how can I balance scales and even used our knowledge of composition of number to balance Numicon!
