Safety On The Roads at RAPS

Being safe in the world around them is a big lesson for little ones at Ramsgate Arts Primary.

The importance of learning good practice and being watchful in roads near their home, school and in the wider community is a vital life lesson for the early years group.

To further reinforce the messages being taught in class, the Reception, Year 1 and 2 pupils enjoyed a visit from the Kent Road Safety Club.

The children met Kip the bear, who helped them learn how to stay safe near roads through fun activities and stories. They also watched a screened film called Kip the Bear and the Thinking Hat that explored how Kip stayed safe when crossing the road and riding his scooter.

Parents have also been urged to help reinforce these lessons by talking to their child about road safety whenever they are out and about.

The key message is ‘remember to use the Kent Road Safety Code’.

This states - STOP before the kerb, LOOK and LISTEN for traffic, THINK about what to do, CROSS the road safely with an adult, looking and listening all the time.

Head of School Nick Budge said: “Our Reception children were enthralled by the exploits of Kip and they listened and learnt keenly from the information shown to them on screen and by the Kent Road Safety Club team that held workshops sessions.

“We make every effort to ensure the safety of our children as they grown up – as well as road safety information we also discuss being safe at railway stations and in the water at the seaside.”

The Kent Road Safety Club is an education programme designed for children between the ages of 4-11 and delivered in primary schools across Kent. Effective safety messages are delivered each year of children’s formal primary education to act as building blocks to safer pedestrian and cyclist behaviour.
