Ramsgate Tunnels
On Tuesday, Year 6 visited the Ramsgate Tunnels.
We had a fantastic time and learnt so much about this unique place. The tunnels were dug into the chalk cliffs and kept the people of Ramsgate safe during World War II. We learnt that on 24th August 1940, 500 bombs were dropped on our town in 5 minutes. Although, tragically 31 people died, the rest of the town remained safe some 90 feet below ground.
We also witnessed the mini-town that grew underground, which became home to those unfortunate enough to lose their homes during the bombing campaign. It really opened our eyes to what life was like back then and gave us a real sense of the ordeals experienced by the townsfolk of Ramsgate 85 years ago,
