English: draft the opening  of a science fiction story

Yesterday we planned out a science fiction story. We looked at: the fact that it should:

  • Take place in space or in the future
  • Contain people who go on a journey
  • Include aliens or species from different planets or worlds
  • Have unusual fantasy settings
  • Feature super weapons and tekkie gadgets

Look back over your plan. Today we will begin with the 'introduction' section.

Introduction:  Introduce the characters and the different world straight away. That will mean describing your location and characters. You may want to use the setting description from last week to help, or to think about how you began your Beamfleot piece.

Topic: IK: how the planets in our solar system rotate around the sun.

Our planets work together as they all revolve (or move) around the sun.

The earth rotates, which takes 24 hours (1day!) and it also revolves or orbits around the sun, which takes 365 days (1 year!).  The other planets also orbit the sun, but at different distances as they move around.

The sun doesn’t move– the earth does. This orbiting impacts the seasons, as our planet moves closer and further way from the sun. This clip explains more deeply:

I have attached a Powerpoint for you to look through. There are several  activities that you may be able to try which will help you to understand how all of this fits together.
