The Speaker

During our Oracy Week, there has been a focus on preparing and delivering a speech to the class...

Using the title, 'You wouldn't believe it but...', the children could write about anything that was of interest to them - whether it is a global concern, local issue, hobby or interest. Consequently, we had speeches about global warming, the possibility of another earth, homelessness and art, no name but a few!

Initially, we viewed / listened to some famous speeches from history (Winston Churchill, Martin Luther King Jr and Greta Thunberg) and discussed what made a great speech. All the children then planned and edited their speeches, attempting to include key features such as rhetorical question, repetition, the power of 3, facts, inclusive plurals and direct address.

Finally, the children rehearsed their speeches to focus on clear delivery and engagement with the audience before the class competition. Miss Goode and I were blown away by how well the children did. Every pupil spoke clearly and confidently - even those who didn't want to - and there was real passion and thought in each speech.

When we did a secret vote, every single speech received support and the results were extremely tight. A huge well done to EVERY pupil for participating, but an extra cheer for Grace and Piper who are our class winners and move forward to the school final.
