Exploring Ancient Egypt at RAPS

Delving into the mysteries of ancient Egypt has unearthed a treasure trove of knowledge for children at Ramsgate Arts Primary

The Year 4 group is exploring the history, culture and heritage of the civilisation and learned how archaeologists such as Howard Cater and his team - who revealed Pharaoh Tutankhamun’s buried tomb in the Valley of the Kings - have uncovered the past.

A special focus day saw pupils in costume complete a number of ‘missions’ to find out which new god they were worshipping.

The RAPS ancient Egyptians got to work dancing to appease Ra, god of the sun. Once they had restored the light they got to work making pyramids.

During break, they re-energised by feasting on a slave staple of bread and water before cracking hierologic codes and working on a large-scale pyramid together. Some of the children also explored area and perimeter using sugar cubes.

Finally, they carefully dug up ancient artefacts and relics discovered in the foundations of our pyramid.

These included an ancient tablet that revealed the name of their new god, Khnum, god of the river Nile and creator of humans.

The special event was run by teachers Miss Hayzelden and Miss Bullard. Head of School Nick Budge said: “This day really helped bring a lot of the children’s knowledge together in a fun learning challenge. It is a brilliant way of reinforcing what they know and helps bring the subject alive.”

Ramsgate Arts Primary is part of the Viking Academy Trust with its partner schools Chilton Primary in Ramsgate and Upton Juniors in Broadstairs.
