Digging into Ancient History at RAPS.

The Year 4 children were challenged with an archaeological dig that they needed to search through for possible relics of the centuries-old civilisation.

Dressed in a range of colourful costumes reflecting the historical period, they carefully had to sift through sand to dig for artefacts, such as scarab beetles, an Egyptian head rest and other items of interest.

Unearthed treasures were gently cleaned using soft brushes and pupils had to use their knowledge of the period to predict what the site may have been in the past, utilising clues they had been given through hieroglyphics.

The dig was a culmination of their learning topic that included researching about the construction and meaning of the pyramids, the mummification process, and Ancient Egyptian hierarchies.

They also studied Mathematics from the period, and were given a piece of string with 12 equally spaced knots which could be used to create right angles in much the same way as was used nearly 3000 years ago.

Teacher Joshua Cialis said: “The children were fascinated by this period in history and were really engaged with all aspects of our learning, finding out how the civilisation developed and what happened in daily life.

“The archaeological dig was a perfect way to finish this topic and our pupils were enthusiastic to categorise the finds they unearthed. They were very thorough throughout the whole process – and the outfits and costumes they wore for the occasion were creative and colourful, and added to the special event.”
