Giants of History Celebrated at Ramsgate Arts Primary

Creative children have curated a ‘living museum’ of inspirational historic figures at Ramsgate Arts primary.
Pupils from Year 2 dressed up as different famous faces from the past that they have been studying in their Significant People topic work.
They included the world’s first computer programmer Ada Lovelace, education activist and youngest Nobel peace prize winner Malala Yousafzai, artist Frida Kahlo, suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst, natural history expert David Attenborough, archaeologist and Egyptologist Howard Carter, environmental activist Greta Thunberg, and the founder of modern nursing Florence Nightingale.
It was part of a colourful celebration marking the end of the project and the special day also included the year group enjoying a range of other activities, co-ordinated by their teachers Rebecca Morris and Helen McCurry.
These included digging for fossils like the palaeontologist Mary Anning; listening to and ‘rocking out’ to the popular music and creating their own band names, covers and writing songs; and even designing their own planes like the Wright Brothers for a 'paper plane' challenge.
During recent weeks, children learned about different artists, activists, inventors and explorers.
They have created stunning artwork inspired by Minnie Evans, Picasso and Matisse, written diary entries as Florence Nightingale, learnt about the actions of Nelson Mandela, pretended to be reporters and journalists, interviewing the first humans to walk on the moon and learnt all about the Great Fire of London.
Assistant Head of School Kiki Amin said: “The children have absolutely loved this unit, especially exploring timelines to find where they fit in (which is critical learning for their understanding of time and history), delving into the 'Little People, Big Dreams' series, and creating dioramas of significant people in action as part of their Love to Learn initiative.
“The special end of topic day was a fabulous way to end a fascinating programme of important learning.”
Ramsgate Arts Primary is part of the Viking Academy Trust with its partner schools Chilton Primary in Ramsgate and Upton Juniors in Broadstairs.
