Newsround story

Please read information regarding a newsround story the children saw today.

Hi all,

This afternoon, the children watched today's, Newsround on CBBC. A story about girls not being allowed to go to school in Afghanistan came up, and we ended up having a discussion around this. I am so proud of the children for their very thoughtful comments, but just so that you are aware, terrorism was brought up as it was linked to the news story. I spoke to the children about what the word 'terrorism' means and assured them that this is an extreme situation and that is why it is on the news.

We spoke about how important it is to know what happens in other places as it can help us to form our own opinions, of the world. I made it clear that everything is an opinion and that people have differing reasons for believing different things.

They may still have some questions or wish to discuss and debate more of what we spoke about briefly today, so I have encouraged them, should that be the case, they are to speak to trusted adults.

As we know, debates and discussions of this nature can get quite intense and heated, so I apologise in advance for any headaches induced from deep talks about gender and human rights that you may get into with your children.

However, what a wonderful opportunity for our young souls to express their moral stance, opinions and beliefs !
