Daily home challenges: Monday 20th April

What will you learn today?

Good morning Team Spurrier,

I hope you had a great weekend. I'm looking forward to hearing from you all this week and seeing what exciting things you have been up to at home. Remember you can email me your learning and leave a message or a photo for your friends to see on our class Padlet.

Maths:

Counting: Counting in a silly  (squeaky, whispering, robotic, deep, loud) voice to 20 (if you can count beyond 20 then go for it!)

Challenge: What does double mean? If we double a number it means we add the same amount. So if I wanted to double 1 I would add 1 to 1. It's good to start using concrete resources like small figures or building blocks that the children can manipulate to work out double (using a mirror is a good tool to help, see photos at the bottom of the blog). Then they could move onto using pictures to show the doubling method and then finally using numerals. I have attached photos at the bottom to illustrate the progression of this. Keep it practical. Once the children have grasped the concept, test if they can they show you doubles of a number using their fingers. 'Show me 2....double it....show me 5....double it'

In the home learning folder there is an extension to further develop the understanding of doubling use 'EYFS Maths solving problems doubling home learning challenges'.

RWI will be starting up their live lessons on their You tube channel on Monday 20th April too. They have added some green word lessons and spelling lessons too.

Topic

Theme: Growth

Main: The tiny seed.  Read the story of the tiny seed in the link below. What happened in the story? What happened to the seed? Where did it go?

How can we move when the seed is being blown along in the wind?

How can we show that the Tiny Seed is hot/cold?

What happens next to the Tiny Seed?

Then what happens to the Tiny Seed?

What happens to the Tiny Seed in autumn? Winter? Spring? Summer?

How can we show how tall the flower has grown?

What happens to these new seeds? At the end of the story, review the life cycle: ‘First you were the seeds that went on a long journey, then you grew and grew into a big tall flower that grew more seeds that blew away in the wind.’  What do the children think will happen to those new seeds?

Challenge: Can the children create a piece of art in the style of The tiny seed illustrations. They could use leaves to create a flower. Or tiny paint dots to show the dispersal.  Where would your seed go on a journey? Can you look in the garden or out on a walk for any flowers that may have grown in a strange place. How do you think they got there?
