Thursday 30th April 2020

Good morning Team Aitken

Thrilling Thursday brings you another Think Outside the Box activity!!!! See attached.

Maths:

To get you brains ready for mathematical thinking, please count in steps of 2, 5, and 10. Be inventive, make your own number line or counting stick. Draw lily pads with the numbers on them and jump to the correct numbers in order.

The rest of our measure learning today in maths is to do with two new terms; Capacity and Volume.

Capacity is the amount that a cup, bottle or bucket (container) can hold. It could be filled with water, slime, pasta or juice.

Volume is the actual amount of something that is held within a container.

Watch this video of Miss Aitken explaining what to do https://vimeo.com/413147693 The password is Year1

Have a go at identifying different sized containers around the house that have larger or smaller capacities.

Also look out for the things inside the containers. You could use water to experiment with the capacity and volume. Use the language of volume; full, half full, almost full, almost empty, half empty, empty to describe the volume or amount of what’s inside.

Compare the volume of the things inside. You could experiment, a small jar might be full of water, but if you transfer the whole volume of water to a larger jar, what happens then? Did the volume or the capacity change?

Have a go at the work sheets attached below ( Capacity-volume) or find them on the White Rose website
https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/ under Lesson 4 ‘Get the Activity’ link.

English

Mrs Smart’s group

I hope you enjoyed creating a story mountain about The Ugly Duckling

So now you know the story very well! Today I’d like you to imagine that you ARE the ugly duckling in the story. You are going to write a diary entry from his point of view. When we write a diary, we are expressing our feelings and thoughts about events.

Thinking time - have a think about the duckling’s feelings at each stage in this story. Tell your grown up.

Let’s consider the features of a diary entry. Have a look at the diary writing powerpoint before you start.

I would like you to write one diary entry. You can choose between these 2 events in the story and consider the emotions and thoughts the duckling would be having:

  1. The moment when the duckling is hatched, how excited he is to be born and then the feelings that quickly follow when he is rejected by his brothers and sisters and even his mum is surprised and tells him he’s not like her other babies.

  1. The moment when he meets the swans and they invite him to come with them. They tell him he is not ugly and that he is a swan and when he looks at his reflection, he sees that he is not ugly at all but a beautiful swan!

Remember to include:

  • The date

  • Time words in the right order of events

  • Writing in the first person (I, me)

  • Write in the past tense (was, saw, felt)

  • Describe feelings with adjectives and adverbs (eg I felt so lonely and sad I began to sob loudly and the tears did not stop.)

Topic

Today we are going to be asking the question What lives in my environment?

What is an environment? Can you tell your grown-ups? Your environment is what is around you – including the air, soil, water, plants, and animals. All these things make up your environment! But environments can vary greatly depending on where they are in the world. The living things we find in our environment in Australia are very different from those in the environment in Antarctica!

Thinking time - look at the picture called animals and environmments.jpg Talk to your grown up about the differences in these places and how it affects the things that live there.

Now let’s think about our own environment. Our environment is the soil, the air around us, the plants and all the living things from the different animal groups -  insects, reptiles, mammals, birds, fish and amphibians.

Today we are going to get to know the living things that could be found in a garden or a park near you.

Look at this video – how many of living things do you recognise?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/biology-ks1-ks2-wonders-of-nature-wildlife-in-our-gardens/zkx2t39

Did you know a tree is a type of plant? How many trees can you name? Here’s a guide to trees you might find in your environment – see how many you recognise:

https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/trees-woods-and-wildlife/british-trees/a-z-of-british-trees/

What plants and flowers could we find? You have probably seen many of these wildflowers growing without realising or knowing their name. Here are some of the most common ones – do you recognise any of them?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J21yxMQKSj4

https://www.countrylife.co.uk/gardens/a-simple-guide-to-the-wildflowers-of-britain-71271

We have been learning how to care for pets in our homes this week. Should we care for living things in the wild in the same way as we care for our pets? No! (You couldn’t take a fox for a walk or clean out a hedgehog’s home!) Talk to your grown up about how we could care for wild animals (eg reducing litter, knowing about the RSPCA or RSPB, leaving animals in the wild and not removing them from their environment).

Next time you are out and about see if you can notice any of the living creatures we have looked at today and you might even spot some others!

As an optional challenge could you design a colourful poster showing all the living things you know in your environment (this includes animals, insects, birds, trees and plants!)

SPaG / handwriting

Let’s practise spelling this next set of sight words with Jack Hartmann (these are words we use all the time so we need to know them!) We are using the letter names (not the sounds) when we spell them

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BMH8CBNgo8w&t=169s

Can you practise spelling these tricky words in your best handwriting!
Do one line of each word:
