  • Number Families

    Published 10/02/20, by Isla Aitken

Today we were introduced to the concept of finding number families. Using the part part whole method we were able to find the related addition and subtraction facts. This is called the inverse. If you ask we might be able to explain what this means or use another word to describe it (opposite). Using our knowledge of number bonds we understand that a whole number (e.g. 10) can have two (or more...we'll learn this later) parts (e.g. 2 +8) and that if we add them which ever way round we will still get the same answer (whole number). Now with the inverse we have learned that by starting with the whole number (e.g. 10) we can subtract one part to end up with the other part! So all in all we can have four separate calculations using the same number family (e.g.10, 2 and 8).

  • A rain jacket for Ted

    Published 06/02/20, by Isla Aitken

After deciding on the best water resistant material we designed and later made rain jackets for a teddy. We independently drew and labelled out designs and worked with a partner to execute our creations. It was great fun being both scientists and fashion designers in one week!!!

  • Science experiment in water resistance

    Published 06/02/20, by Isla Aitken

This week we have been discussing appropriate clothing for different types of weather. But we didn't stop there, our enquiring minds led us to discuss which materials would be best suited to wet weather. We learnt the terms water resistant and absorbent and tested some well know and used materials to see which might make the best rain jacket for a teddy. Ask us which materials were most water resistant and which absorbed the most water. We might even be able to tell you which material we decided on as the best to make our jackets and why!

  • Weather forecast

    Published 31/01/20, by Isla Aitken

This week the children have really delved in to the science of weather prediction and forecasting. WE made rain gauges which are sitting outside our classroom collecting rain. Over the next couple of weeks we will be monitoring the amount of rain fall we have.

Then on Thursday we had great fun pretending to be weather presenters. We used the correct language to forecast what the weather would be like later afternoon.  If you fancy a laugh at home, ask us to step in for your usual weather forecaster to predict the weather for the weekend. We might even provide some handy advice on what to wear.

  • Making ten and a fair swap

    Published 29/01/20, by Isla Aitken

On Friday we started to understand how our binary number system is based on making ten. We used objects to make ten and count on and this helped us understand the value of the digits as tens and ones. Then we made groups of ten to swap fairly and subsequently moved on to working on partitioning numbers in our books!

For the next few weeks, Ms Vost will be teaching art lessons to half the class on a Monday afternoon. The other half will continue with P.E. as usual. Each week we will swap the groups so that all the children access the fullness of both curricula. The works produced In art will later be entered in to a Rotary Club competition and be exhibited in Sainsbury's

  • P.E. - Acro-Gymnastics

    Published 23/01/20, by Isla Aitken

This term in P.E. we are doing gymnastics. So far we have had fun practising our balance and movements and we have even been creating short sequences of 3-4 moves and balances in groups or pairs. It has been great fun performing in front of each other. Ms Aitken  and Mr Robinson (our sports coach assistant) have been very impressed at how in time and well sequenced we are being with our routines!

  • What's the time Mr Wolf?

    Published 23/01/20, by Isla Aitken

We have been learning to tell the time to the hour and to half past the hour. We even made our own clocks!

Ask us the time on the hour and at every half past the hour to help us feel really confident about telling the time! It would also challenge us to think about things happening in an hour or 2 hours time. We might even like to think about things that have already happened an hour or half an hour ago!

    Published 18/01/20, by Isla Aitken

This term we are exploring 'A World of Weather' in our topic learning. There will be a lot of science involved, so to start us off we created some art using a chemical reaction between water and oil based nail varnish. The varnish created a beautiful rainbow effect on black card. Watch this space for the display on our Art to Start board. Thank you to the adults who were able to attend the workshop! There will be more opportunities to came in to class for activities or help on school trips as the year goes on.
