Number Families
Today we were introduced to the concept of finding number families. Using the part part whole method we were able to find the related addition and subtraction facts. This is called the inverse. If you ask we might be able to explain what this means or use another word to describe it (opposite). Using our knowledge of number bonds we understand that a whole number (e.g. 10) can have two (or more...we'll learn this later) parts (e.g. 2 +8) and that if we add them which ever way round we will still get the same answer (whole number). Now with the inverse we have learned that by starting with the whole number (e.g. 10) we can subtract one part to end up with the other part! So all in all we can have four separate calculations using the same number family (e.g.10, 2 and 8).
