Number Bonds to 5

Information about the Early Years Foundation Stage and how we assess.

At the end of the reception year we have to asses each child against the Early Learning Goals, ELGs. Within the Early Years Foundation Stage, EYFS, there are seven areas of learning which are then broken down into 17 ELGs. We currently have a bigger focus on the Mathematics area of learning, we spend the year gathering lots of maths knowledge that we now need to assess against.

The three ELGs for Number are:

Number

  • Have a deep understanding of number to 10, including the composition of each number.
  • Subtise (recognise quantities without counting) up to 5.
  • Automatically recall (without reference to rhymes, counting or other aids) number bonds up to 5 (including subtraction facts) and some number bonds to 10, including double facts.

This week we are focussing on number bonds to 5. The children need to be able to recall the number bond promptly when asked; e.g. ‘If I had 4, how many more do I need to make 5?’. Today we sang ‘5 Little Speckled Frogs’ and used the tens frame with double sided counters to show the number bonds.

It would be great if you could help reinforce this at home, the children have a really good understanding of numbers to 10, they just need to be speedy with answering number bonds.

Do let me know if you have any questions about the ELGs/EYFS/anything at all!
